An introduction to our National Account Manager for Education and the service options you could be enjoying.

Hello, my name is David Griffiths and I’m National Account Manager for Education at apetito.

It’s a particularly busy and exciting time for me as my role is promoting the exciting new range of products designed specifically for education caterers to deliver the Nutrient Based Standards for primary schools, in place from September 2008. I’ve had a real passion for the sector ever since my first experience cooking school meals at Pentrebane Junior School whilst at University.

I have worked in the education sector for over 10 years now with a major wholesaler and manufacturer and I consider school meals an essential welfare service that benefits the learning and development of all pupils. In the past, like most welfare catering sections, the school meals sector was treated as the poor relation – underfunded and underestimated, relying solely on the expertise and commitment of staff resigned to working on a meagre budget.

The provision of school meals continues to operate within an ever changing political environment. However the new laws regarding Food Based Standards in 2006-2007 were quickly followed by the introduction of Nutrient Based Standards in primary schools, to be implemented from September 2008. Unfortunately such legislation has merely resulted in declining meal numbers and income - particularly amongst secondary schools. It seems the only good thing that can be said about Jamie Oliver is that he has raised the profile of the School Meals Service - gaining valuable funding! However in the primary school market the initial drops in meal uptakes are now climbing back up to pre-Jamie days – good news for the health of the next generation.

apetito launched the Education Range at the LACA Conference in July of this year generating leads in 76 LEAs. However this is only the beginning - my role is to turn these leads into long-term, valued customers through 2008 and beyond.

We have a number of trials organised which are designed to deliver flexible solutions to meet our customers' needs – ease of handling, reduced waste and most of all a healthy, delicious and popular menu.

We offer three main service options for our customers –

  1. Full service with a menu comprising of a wide range of two course meals - meat, vegetables and/or potatoes and dessert, to be regenerated onsite with no need for kitchens.
  2. Main course and dessert with locally sourced vegetables to be prepared onsite.
  3. As supplementary dishes to be served alongside existing service, to offer a wider choice or to simply save time – our chilli is a perfect topping for jacket potatoes.

I’m really looking forward to a healthy, prosperous 2008 and feel confident that with such convenient, quality products and a flexible service we can expand this area of the business to its full potential - from primary through to secondary schools.
