oak view and willow lodge care homes

Steve Geach runs Oak View and Willow Lodge Care Homes in Hampshire. Like any home manager, he knows food quality is one of the biggest factors for residents and their families choosing a home.

The move to apetito is saving my care homes £117,850 a year.

Cost savings

One of the most significant benefits of Oak View appointing apetito is the financial savings. With no need for meal preparation, kitchen size has been reduced to free-up space for an extra 15ft bedroom, bringing in an additional £33,850 a year.

As Steve explains, “Appointing apetito has not only improved food quality and made for happier residents, it also added to my bottom line right from the start and increased the value of my business by a factor of 7.8”. Coupled with the money Steve saved in reduced labour costs, reduced waste from food and reduced waste for recycling, this resulted in a total cost benefit of £69,050.

In fact, Steve was so impressed with the results at Oak View that he introduced apetito’s services to its sister home, Willow Lodge. “With such strong results, bringing apetito on-board at Willow Lodge was an easy decision,” adds Steve.

Willow Lodge has also reduced kitchen space to create an extra bedroom that generates a similar revenue increase to Oak View. And with more residents enjoying their meals, far less food is thrown away across both homes, leading to even more savings.

“Care home managers like me simply cannot afford to miss opportunities that guarantee quality care for residents while making big savings. Changing to apetito was truly the right move for us. And their approach worked so well, I did it twice!”

When choosing a care home, food quality sits right alongside the standard of accommodation. Creating meals that are consistently high quality, varied and nutritious can be tough going – made harder still by government cuts and the recession driving up demand for state-funded places.

Nutrition and food quality

He also knows the real challenge is serving tasty and nutritious meals that meet CQC guidelines without going over budget. “When choosing a care home, food quality sits right alongside the standard of accommodation. Creating meals that are consistently high quality, varied and nutritious can be tough going – made harder still by government cuts and the recession driving up demand for state-funded places,” says Steve.

When Steve and his team went to the Bournemouth Care Show they weren’t necessarily looking for a new food provider. They’d tried other suppliers in the past and hadn’t been impressed. Then they came across apetito. “It was the incredible smell of the food that got my attention,” explains Steve. “It was too good to resist, and we literally followed our noses.”

The next step was a taster evening for residents and their families to try the food and see how apetito’s 200+ dishes cater for all dietary, health or cultural requirements. “It’s important to reassure families they’ve made the right decision in choosing our home.” explains Steve. Oak View also benefits from apetito’s Nutriplan system which ensures that residents’ diets are nutritionally balanced throughout a menu cycle and assures the CQC that standards are being met.
