Dementia spending 'needs to be more productive'
25 Jan, 2011
More well thought out spending might be of benefit to people with dementia, if recent suggestions are anything to go by.
A report by the Alzheimer's Society stated there is often inadequate help for a number of people with dementia in terms of allowing them to complete everyday tasks such as shopping, washing and dressing.
This will cause 50,000 people to move into a
care home sooner than necessary, causing a monthly bill of £70 million to the taxpayer.
The care services minister, Paul Burstow, suggested more money is not necessarily the right solution to the problem, saying: "It is about spending better. We know we are already spending at European levels but not achieving the right results."
Dementia experts have recently been urged to submit more bids to receive some of the government's £1 billion research fund.
Ministers have promised to prioritise dementia research from March and are offering additional support to ensure proposals are of a high enough standard to pass independent scrutiny.
