Elderly care food 'an essential service'
26 Jan, 2011
Elderly care food delivery is a valuable service that many people cannot do without, it has been suggested.
Speaking to the Manchester Evening News Major Ray Ward, from Wilmslow - who works with a number of older residents in the town as part of his work for the Salvation Army - has expressed his concern about the potential cancellation of a meals on wheels service.
People across the district are currently provided with meals each day but new measures propose they look to buy meals from the supermarket themselves.
"It’s all right to say go and buy your own, but quite often these people can’t get out," said Mr Ward, 62, of Moss Lane.
Those responsible for elderly food provision may know for themselves the benefits a frozen food service can provide.
This follows a recent report from the Alzheimer's Society, which indicated there are 500,000 people living with dementia at home currently, but up to one in ten of them may end up in a
care home early because of a lack of provisions in place to help them with everyday tasks.
