News From apetito Canada

apetito UK's Production Manager, Matt Fitt, is on secondment to apetito Canada and reports back on his first few weeks in his new role.

Matt Fitt"Hi to you all back in the UK!

I’ve finally found the time to write about my first impressions of Canada.

On arrival I made my way to Immigration to apply for my work permit and queued up listening to the officers barking “Next!” as a space became free.

When it was my turn I walked over to the counter expecting an angry official but was greeted very politely. She asked a great number of questions about my life in England, my job in Canada and back in the UK. I was most impressed with her thoroughness and told her to which she responded, “oh no, I’ve sorted the permit, I just wanted to find out more about you”!

Mark Kirkley, Production Manager apetito Canada,  met me as I came through customs but I wasn’t prepared for the heat and humidity outside. By the time I had  dragged my snowboard to the car I was drenched with sweat and attracting odd glances from the locals.

Next day, Saturday, I went to see the factory. It’s is a lot smaller than Trowbridge and has a total output of 40 tons a week the equivalent of one days Trowbridge de-box output and runs to a six week rolling plan.

On Monday I got to meet the team. There are thirteen people in the Kitchen and Prep area  (which is great because thirteen is my lucky number!). They like to listen to loud R&B and Hip- Hop while working and somehow never seem to argue over what should be played.

I have just moved from the hotel I was staying in to an apartment in Toronto, so now I feel slightly more settled than I have done over the past few weeks. No more running around after work looking for somewhere to live is a great relief."

Look out for a further update from our Canadian Factory in September.
