Clare Hunt from the apetito Care Homes team is joined by Tanya Ednan-Laperouse OBE, Founder and Trustee of The Natasha Allergy Research Foundation, Emily Stuart, apetito Dietitian and Iain Mortimer, apetito’s Group Technical Manager who oversees and manages all elements of food safety and allergen controls at apetito.

Allergies can have a profound effect on the lives of individuals, with 1 in 6 of those with allergy having sufficiently severe symptoms to require medical help[1]. Food allergies are extremely prevalent, with a rising two million people in the UK alone living with one[2] and a 500% increase seen in hospital admissions due to food allergy over the last 30 years[3].

Given the scale of the population who may be living with food allergy, it can be considered likely that most care homes will encounter a resident living with a food allergy on a regular basis.

Viewers of ‘Guarding Against Allergens’ can learn about the importance of allergy processes, the devastating consequences when individuals are not protected and how to ensure resident safety at mealtimes.

Tanya shares her story and the work of Natasha’s Foundation which is doing inspirational work to mitigate food allergies within the population.  She says:

“Many people do feel isolated and misunderstood when seeking help, and we have found that care home professionals have often not received specific allergy training.

"Although we know that things are changing and allergen conversations are taking place more openly, it’s vital that we continue raising awareness and understanding to drive the further positive change required."

Viewers will also be able to learn more about apetito’s Free From Meals range, which offers delicious meals that are free from all 14 of the main allergens, with no compromise on flavour, or taste.

Richard Woodward, General Manager for Care Homes at apetito says:

“As one of the UK’s leading care home meals providers, we know how important it is to ensure residents with allergies are effectively catered for. Allergies are something that must be taken extremely seriously, which is why we see the importance in testing a sample from every batch of Gluten-Free and Free From meals in our accredited, on-site laboratory.

"We’re delighted to have Tanya join Emily and Iain for a really interesting and informative discussion about the importance of the allergy process, challenges care homes face in ensuring their meals are safe for residents and the groundbreaking work that The Natasha Allergy Research Foundation is pioneering and driving on a global level when it comes to allergy medical research."
